October Week 1

Hello amazing youth and mentors!

 You are all so amazing! And I am so happy and excited to have a new school year, with new beginnings, new chances, new challenges and new relationships with you and God.

 When we are following God our choices are always going to be right because our heart is in the right place…so we want to make the right choices.

When I am not wanting to do something and I do it grudgingly, it’s not going to benefit me or anyone because my heart isn’t in it.

 I also know that when I am staying in line to what the Lord wants me to do, and my heart is striving and doing its best, then I will know I am doing right and good things. I know this is a principle and truth!

I love you all with all my heart. I hope you remember how much I love each and every one of you!

Week 1:

Skills:

1.  Read: Turn the Page Chapter 5. Practice “arguing with the author” in all of your readings this week.

2. Read: Write Well. Change the World Ch. 3

6. Read “What Makes it Great” Chapter 2 and listen to the examples

7. Listen to Bach while you work or do you math :-)

CORE:

Do first (by the Thursday before class):

Read: Putting on the Armor of God Chapter 8 and answer the

following questions in your journal: Which strategy does

Satan use to keep you from saying sincere prayers sometimes?

Do something this week to overcome this temptation. 

What did you learn? Track your 6 goals this week.

Do the rest of the study week:

 1. Read or Watch: The Choice Generation

2. Read: Chapter 15 from Beautiful Girlhood (young ladies) or

"Integrity" from Mansfield’s Guide and ponder the questions

(young men) and write your favorite truth/principle from that chapter.

3. Create: Create something to share about something that inspired you this week, such as: a poem, paper, drawing, painting, timeline, video, song, blog post, speech, visual presentation, digital piece, letter, or another way to share the truth you learned. Be ready to share why it inspired you.

 Try a different way to share than what you tried last week. Remember, this can be a rough draft of what you take to Journeyman to refine and it may be the writing you are doing for Master class. Post what you did on the blog.  

Some “Create” ideas:

Armor of God: Create a sincere prayer by challenging yourself to pray for 30 minutes and really talk to your Father in Heaven.  Keep a journal nearby to write down any impressions your receive.

The Choice Generation: Make a chart comparing your daily choices to an internet search

Beautiful Girlhood: Create a letter to your mother, telling her how much you appreciate her friendship. 

If you have wronged a friend in the past by sharing her confidences or talking to others about her, write her a letter of apology and strive to be a better friend.

Create a better character by practicing for a day, being “womanly and pure” in your friendships. Tell us what that was like and what it meant to you.

Manly Men: After pondering the four questions on page 171-72, take one of them and create an experience by doing everything it tells you and then share with us your experience.

Create a graphic summary of the story of Job and write the principles you learn from him.

JOURNEYMAN:

Read: Aspire Chapter 4 and write your thoughts in your journal

Bring: a paper copy of a project from Core, Journeyman or Master for review and revision

Free write: Write about anything at all without editing and without stopping for ten minutes

MASTER:

Read: Bonds That Make Us Free to Ch.6 OR  Leadership and Self-Deception Part 1: Self-Deception and the "Box"

Write and Email: In thinking about and observing the power of being honest with yourself about your weaknesses and self-betrayals, what have been your insights? If you haven't been discovering weaknesses and self-betrayals in yourself, what do you think might be holding you back? What do you think holds other back? Email your thoughts to Sis. Housholder

Ponder: Look at the list of ideas of what you can create on the last week, think about what you’ll do.

PRINCIPLES OF LIBERTY:

·         Read Chapter 2 of Lead like Jesus.  As you read, stop and do the: Pause and Reflect sections. There are 9 of them. After you have finished the chapter, go back and review your notes, and consider where your EGO is, remember no one has a perfect EGO- think of some ways that you can improve your heart to be a servant leader.  Write it down, set a goal, and work on it all month! Remember: Make it a SMART goal.  

·         Principles of Liberty: Do the Principles of Liberty Course, month 2, week 1 in your student manual.  Bring your notes, thoughts, and answers to the questions to class.  If you didn’t finish all the work from last month, get caught up! You can do it, and it will be so much more meaningful and beneficial to you.

YOUTH MENTORS:

Read: Learning Styles Matter by Oliver DeMille, bring your notes about how you can apply these to our discussions in Vanguard.  Challenge: Search your scriptures to see if God has anything to say about learning styles.

September Week 4 (due October 1st)

Week 4:

Do first (by the Thursday before class):

1. Read: Turn the Page Chapter 4. Practice “being open” in all of your reading this week.

2. Read: Putting on the Armor of God Chapters 6&7 and answer the following questions in your journal:  Write down some of the thoughts you have that provoke the strongest emotions.  If the strength of your thoughts increases the strength of the current in your mind, what did you learn from this experience?

3. Make a plan: to keep tracking your goal progress and working on your memorization

Do the rest of the study week:

1. Word Study: Write a personal definition to the word you chose that includes at least 3 principles and how you plan to apply them.

2. Read: The Alchemist

3. Read: Intro to page 46 of What Would the Founding Fathers Think?
4. Write: something to turn in to John using the 5 secrets of great writing (this may be writing you are doing for another assignment).
5. Draw: Be working on the Drawing Textbook

6. Create: Create something to share about something that inspired you this week such as: a poem, paper, drawing, painting, timeline, video, song, blog post, speech, Goodreads review, visual presentation, digital piece, letter, or another way to share the truth you learned.  Try a different way to share than what you tried last week. JOURNEYMAN:

1. Read: Aspire – Chapter 3 and write your thoughts in your journal

2. Bring: a project from Core, Journeyman or Master for review and revision - have it printed to turn in.

MASTER:

Write: a final paper or blog post about what you learned from this book throughout the month (see paper writing ideas here).  – you may use in it some of the writing that you have already done for this book so far. Take it to Journeyman on Wednesday for review.

Email: Email a discussion question you want to discuss from the book to Sis. Pack by October 1^st.

Create: Pick a way from the list below to present what you learned from the book and how you can apply it to your life. We are going to ask you to pick a new option every month, so be prepared to stretch yourself:)! You'll have an opportunity in Journeyman the Wednesday before class to improve and refine your inspirement.

1.       Write a poem

2.       Make a poster board presentation

3.       Write and present a speech

4.       Draw a picture about what you learned

5.       Create a painting or a sculpture about what you learned

6.       Bring an object lesson to share

7.       Build something to represent what you learned

11.   Write a letter to someone sharing the principles that you learned and how you want to apply them to your life

12.   Compare and contrast two characters of the book and the outcome of their decisions

13.   Think of another creative way you can present the lessons that you learned from this book and get it approved by Brother or Sister Pack

PRINCIPLES OF FREEDOM:

2. Current Events: For your readings this week, you will need to read at least two current events.  You can choose your own from the sites listed in your manual, or you can choose from the links on the Leadership blog.

3. Continue working on what you learned from Chapter 1 in Lead like Jesus

**Optional reading: If you want to learn more and having a more enriching experience throughout the year, you can read the book, Whatever Happened to Justice? by Richard Maybury.  It will help you better understand many of the concepts taught in this first month.

September Week 3 (due Sep 24)

 

Week 3:

CORE:

Do first (by the Thursday before class):

1. Read: Turn the Page Chapter 3. Practice “beginning with a plan” in all of your reading this week.

2. Make a plan: to keep tracking your goal progress and working on your memorization

Do the rest of the study week:

1. Word Study: Choose and read another talk that has to do with your word and write your favorite quote, and the principles you found, in your word study.

2. Listen and Read: What Makes it Great Introduction and to page 25.  Listen to the examples here as you read.

3. Watch: Number 1 on the Constructing the Universe DVD OR read Chapter 1 of Beginner’s Guide OR chapter 1 of God Saw that it was Good

4. Read: This article: Hebrew: The Language of Liberty

5. Watch: This short video about the Hebrew Letter Aleph OR this longer video (super awesome) if you really want to start to get the essence of the letter (watch until it gets to Bet)

6. Make a collage: of the things you learned about the number 1 and the letter Aleph in your nature sketch book

7. Read: Write Well, Change the World Chapter 2

8. Create: Create something to share about something that inspired you this week such as: a poem, paper, drawing, painting, timeline, video, song, blog post, speech, goodreads review, visual presentation, digital piece, letter, or another way to share the truth you learned.  Try a different way to share than what you tried last week. And choose one of the following:

1. Find a quote about the importance of keeping a journal and write about what it means to you and why it is important to you personally.

2. Find a way to personalize your journal and write about the meaning of why you chose to personalize it that way. (embellish, graffiti, stickers, nothing...)

3. Read a little (or a lot) of some of the pioneer journals found here. Or the journal of a relative or someone that inspires you.  Think and write about how and why their journals have inspired you, and what action you will take.

MASTER:

Read: Finish Uncle Tom’s Cabin

Continue: working on your Cultural Literacy Terms

Choose: an internal character trait you are admiring in Tom from your Character T-Chart.  Practice that trait to the best of your ability for 3 days. Write about it in your journal and be ready to share some of what you learned from this in class when we meet. Again, you can write about your thoughts and refine them into a paper or blogpost in Journeyman if you would like.

September Week 2 (due Sep 17)

Week 2:

CORE:

Do first (by the Thursday before class):

1. Read: Turn the Page Chapter 2. Practice “starting with a question” in all of your reading this week.

2.  Read: Putting on the Armor of God Chapters 4&5 and write down what you felt inspired to do after reading the chapter OR answer the following questions in your journal: Notice your self-talk this week. Write some of the things you find yourself saying to yourself. Are your words positive or negative? What did you learn from this experience?

3. Make a plan: to keep tracking your goal progress and working on your memorization

Do the rest of the study week:

1. Word Study: Read Your Four Minutes and write your favorite quotes in your word study

2. Listen and Read: What Makes it Great Chapter Introduction and to page 17.  Listen to the examples here as you read.

3. Read: Finish Mocassin Trail or Porter Rockwell

4. Research: your family history and see if you can find any stories in your family in the time of the Western Expansion (pioneers). Bring that story to share. If you can’t find a family story, research a person from that time period that you admire and bring a story.

5. Draw: Work from your writing skills book

6. Create: Create something to share about something that inspired you this week such as: a poem, paper, drawing, painting, timeline, video, song, blog post, speech, goodreads review, visual presentation, digital piece, letter, or another way to share the truth you learned.  Try a different way to share than what you tried last week. Remember, this can be a rough draft of what you take to Journeyman to refine and it may be the writing you are doing for Master class.

JOURNEYMAN:

1. Read: Aspire – Chapter 1 and write your thoughts in your journal

2. Read: this blog post about famous men and their journals. Write in your own journal a few ideas that can help you in keeping your own pocket journal.

3. Ponder: what your message is that you would like to share this year. What is important to you right now in your life? How could it be important to others? Write in your journal some ideas of things that inspire you. It could be anything: trees, chocolate chip cookies, Ingrid Michaelson, King Benjamin. When do you feel the spirit? Make a list and refer to it often. Be prepared to share some of your list with the group in Week 2.

4. Bring: a project from Core, Journeyman or Master for review and revision

MASTER:

Read: Uncle Tom’s Cabin to Chapter 25 “The Little Evangelist” – Keep working on your Character T-Chart

Continue: working on your Cultural Literacy Terms

Compare: As you fill in your Character T-Chart, compare Tom’s character to the monthly principle. Do you think Tom put God first in his life? What are the evidences of your conclusions? What were the consequences (positive or negative) in his life for putting God first? Write your thoughts about this and continue writing them as you continue to read the book. You may turn your thoughts about this into an essay or blogpost and refine it in Journeyman.
