CORE:
Do by Thursday:
Read: Putting
on the Armor of God Chapter 9 and for an entire day take
note of the temptations you have that keep you (or would
keep you)
from doing what God would have you do with your time or
energy at
that moment. Write
in your journal an answer to the following question:
What does that tell
you about yourself, your weaknesses and Satan’s
strategies against you: Track your 6 goals
Do the rest of the study week:
1. Read, Ponder, Discuss: Do a Word Study on the word “Heart” or a similar word, then read Freedom Train (or another book you feel inspired to read about Harriet Tubman or another hero of the Underground Railroad) and answer the discussion questions on this blog by Monday: http://vanguarduniteddiscussions.blogspot.com
2. Research:
your family history and see if you can find any stories in your family that have to do with a selfish or a loving heart. Bring that story to share. If you can’t find a family story, add a
memory to Family Search about anyone in your family showing an unselfish heart (interview someone or share it from your own memory).
3. Create: Prayerfully consider what you can create to share something that inspired you this week, such as: a
poem, paper,
drawing, painting, timeline, video, song, blog post, speech, visual
presentation, digital piece, letter, or another way to share the truth you
learned. If it can be shared online, post it on the discussion blog. Be ready to share why it inspired you.
Try a different
way to share than what you tried last week. Remember, this can be a rough draft
of what you take to Journeyman to refine and it may be the writing you are
doing for Master class. To help us in preparing class. Please comment below (by Monday) about what you worked on creating this week.
Some “create” ideas:
-Create an experience by
thinking of something that is keeping you “captive” – a bad habit or a bad
feeling towards someone – and for a whole day, set yourself free (or rid
yourself) of that habit or feeling.
-Make a video or draw a
favorite scene from the book you read and tell us a principle or truth you
discovered
-Write a song or poem
about the importance of freedom and being willing to work for it
-Write a letter to Harriet
Tubman and tell her what you learned from her and how you plan to be different
because of her example
Read: Aspire –
Chapter 5 and write your thoughts in your journal
Bring: a paper
copy of a project from Core, Journeyman or Master for review and revision
Read: two
hymns and the scriptures that are listed with that hymn. Answer these
questions: How
does the poetry of a hymn compare with the words of the
scriptures? Does the imagery of the
hymn affect you differently than the words of the
scriptures? Why are hymns such a powerful
tool in our fight against the adversary? How can your
poetry be a tool for you to share your
message, or resist the power of the adversary?
Free Writing: What are the ways in which you sing? Write for five minutes about the following
poem:
I Hear America
Singing by Walt Whitman, 1819 - 1892
I hear America
singing, the varied carols I hear,
Those of
mechanics, each one singing his as it should be blithe
and
strong,
The carpenter
singing his as he measures his plank or beam,
The mason singing
his as he makes ready for work, or leaves off
work,
The boatman
singing what belongs to him in his boat, the
deckhand
singing on the steamboat deck,
The shoemaker singing
as he sits on his bench, the hatter singing
as
he stands,
The wood-cutter’s
song, the ploughboy’s on his way in the
morning,
or at noon intermission or at sundown,
The delicious
singing of the mother, or of the young wife at
work,
or of the girl sewing or washing,
Each singing what
belongs to him or her and to none else,
The day what
belongs to the day—at night the party of young
fellows,
robust, friendly,
Singing with open
mouths their strong melodious songs.
