October Week 3

Skills to help you succeed:
1. Read: Turn the Page Chapter 7. Practice “Reading several books at once” in all of your reading this week. (That shouldn’t be too hard ;-) )
2. Read: Write Well. Change the World Ch. 4
3. Drawing Textbook to Lessons 8-10 or #60 on the PDF
4. Work on Memorization Scripture and Poem through "and reveal the reason why"
5. Writing Skills of your choice
6. Listen to Bach while you work or do your math

CORE:
Do before the weekend:

  • 1. Word Study: Learn about the word "Heart" in Hebrew: http://www.ancient-hebrew.org/27_love.html, then learn about the two letters: Beyt and Lamed that make up the word:
  • 2. Beyt: Watch: Hebrew Alphabet Part 1 starting at 40:25 (highly recommended) OR Ancient Hebrew Lesson 2 (if you just want the basics) *take notes for your collage
  • 3. Lamed: Watch: Hebrew Alphabet Part 9 to 25:32 (I couldn't find a shorter version of this one, but feel free to listen until you think you have the essence of the letter if you don't want to listen to all 25 minutes.)

Do the rest of the study week:

1. Create a collage on your sketchbook about the
Numbers 2 (beyt) or/and 12 or 30 (lamed) as you:
Do two of the following:
i) watch Number 2 on the Constructing the Universe DVD
ii) read Chapter 2 of Beginner’s Guide
iii) chapter 2 of God Saw that it was Good
iv) do a word study on path, fall, two, division, or another word having to do with 2 or Beyt

2. Research: something in nature that has to do with the heart, change, or division. You can use anything in any of your science studies this week and find what they can teach you about turning your heart to God
Ideas:
Why do leaves change in the fall?
How do you purify an element?
How does the circulatory system work?
Metamorphosis

3. Find: something in nature or at home that represents the #2 or the letter Beyt.  Plan to present it, with your collage and what you learned about the heart, to your group in some way (lesson, video, speech, activity, whiteboard, etc)

4. Comment: on this blog to let us know what you did and on the discussion blog to answer the question of the week or to comment on someone's thoughts with what you learned.

*Optional: Read or listen to Uncle Tom's Cabin to chapter 8 - we will be having another activity and discussion about it in December for those who finish it

JOURNEYMAN:
Read: Aspire – Chapter 6 and write your thoughts in your journal
Bring: a project from Core, Journeyman or Master for review and revision or to work on it in a group.
Free writing: Write about anything at all without editing and without stopping for ten minutes.
Select: your submission for the journal. Work on getting it ready for publication.

And Choose One:
·         Read poetry by four different poets (at least two poems). Choose one poem and write an interview with the poet about why he wrote that poem. How did he receive inspiration? Why did he choose the words he chose?
·         Read a poem, and then listen to someone else read the poem aloud. How did your interpretation of the poem differ from that of the other reader? Did you receive any different insights as you heard someone else read the poem? Write down your thoughts in your journal.
·         Write a poem of any style about the theme for the month.

MASTER:
Read: Finish Bonds That Make Us Free OR Leadership and Self-Deception Part 3: How we get out of the Box

Write and Email: Get yourself out of the Box this week when you notice you are in it. Write your experience OR Consider a situation in which you need to forgive. Have you made the attempt before? What went wrong? What will genuine forgiveness require in this case? Is there anyone in your experience who seems to have lived the principle of forgiving, at least in part? What do you think has been the experience of living for this person? What kind of influence has he or she had upon others?
Cultural Literacy: Continue learning Cultural Literacy terms

PRINCIPLES OF FREEDOM:
·         Principles of Liberty: Do the Principles of Liberty Course, month 2, week 3 in your student manual.  Bring your notes, thoughts, and answers to the questions to class.
·         Continue: working on your goal to have a servant heart.  How’s it going? Record in your journal the changes you’ve seen.

GREAT BOOKS:
·         Read: Pages 43-93 of Volume 8 Charles Darwin Autobiography. This is long, so don’t save it till the last minute – it is so worth reading! Bring your notes and write a quote and discussion question on the Great Books blog.
·         Read: Chapter 11 of Earth: In the Beginning. Did the Simple Produce the Complex?
